What is the difference between a static and a dynamic IP address?

A static IP address is a number that is assigned to a computer or Internet connection by an Internet Service Provider to be a permanent address on the Internet. Dynamic IP addressing, or DHCP, provides a different IP address each time that you connect to the Internet. Dynamic addresses are kept in a pool and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. By using a dynamic address, you can reduce your exposure to external Internet threats.
